New Paper

Our new paper 'Reconstruction of Three-Dimensional Scroll Waves in Excitable Media from Two-Dimensional Observations using Deep Neural Networks' was published in Physical Review E. In this numerical study, we show that artificial intelligence can predict chaotic electrical excitation waves inside a simulated piece of ventricular muscle tissue from superficial recordings of the activity on the surface. Similar chaotic wave patterns are thought to underlie ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation. In the future, the methodology could be used to compute electrical activity throughout the heart from surface mapping data. Congratulations to Jan Lebert and Meenakshi Mittal! The work is Jan Lebert's 5th publication as lead author and part of his PhD-thesis. A preprint of the paper is also available on arXiv and Supplementary Videos can be found here.
